Check it out. Tina Fey skewers Her Sarahness again. Considering Palin’s recent forays into TV prime-time, with appearances on Fox, and her own reality show, this spoof doesn’t seem too far off the mark. The scary part is, it could be that Fey is just giving her satirical target ideas. If Oprah can start her own network, why not a half-term governor who charges for book signatures and photo ops?
The real question is, will America take Sarah Palin seriously as a presidential candidate? Why not? John McCain took her seriously as a running mate, having given the matter serious consideration for at least five minutes.
Acatually, there’s a certain “hall of mirrors” quality to Palin-inspired comedy these days. Who’s mocking whom? If you’ve watched any of Palin’s recent speeches (her current fee is $100,000 a pop), you’ll notice that she loves to send verbal zingers at her liberal critics whenever she gets the chance. In a speech on Friday, she was in a folksy mood (cute as a button, right?) and she used a PG-rated expletive at one point, then apologized, saying, “Oops! I just said ‘shoot.’ Sorry about that!”
Of course, it was a none-too-subtle swipe at the lefties who have been giving Palin grief over the cross-hair symbols she uses on her website to designate some of those pesky socialist-liberal members of Congress who need to be “taken out.” She’s also taken some heat for using the slogan “don’t retreat, reload,” in reference to the recent health care legislation that the president signed into law. But it’s all in good fun, right?
At the same “don’t shoot” event, Palin passed out packages of caribou jerky to everyone in the audience. I suppose this was either a reference to the nickname that’s become her unofficial brand (Caribou Barbie), or (less likely) a symbolic way of telling her listeners, “Hey, if you’re taking any of this seriously, you must be real jerks!”
